A study of nearly 16,000 students by Queen's University Belfast suggests that schools which communicate with parents using SMS can boost maths results and also reduce absence. The study was conducted in years 7 through to 11 (GCSE) and text messages covered topics such as upcoming deadlines, details of what was studied that week (encouraging parents to quiz their children on the content) and chased missing homework etc.
The large sample size was split into two, with one group receiving approximately 30 texts per year and the other group none. Although the uplift was small they were statistically significant i.e. the effect was real. A n evern bigger impact was felt in terms of absenteeism. The text messaging cost the schools about £6 per pupil over the year - a tiny investment given the lifelong impact. The study was funded by the Education Endowment Foundation.
